Conference on Linguistics and Epistemology

Department
of Philosophy, University of Aberdeen, Scotland, UK.

Saturday/Sunday,
     May 12/13 2007

Conference
     Overview

One of the most striking developments in recent epistemological
theorizing is the use of linguistic data and arguments to defend
epistemological positions. Here are some well-known examples of
     this ‘linguistic turn' in epistemology:

Theories
like epistemological contextualism (as developed by, for instance,
Keith DeRose and Stewart Cohen), subject sensitive invariantism
(as developed by, for instance, John Hawthorne and Jason Stanley),
and epistemological contrastivism (as developed by, for instance,
       Jonathan Schaffer and Walter Sinnott-Armstrong).

Theories
about the relation between knowledge-that and knowledge-how/knowledge-wh:
       knowledge-how is a species of knowledge-that (defended by Stanley&Williamson);
knowledge-that reduces to knowledge-wh (defended by Schaffer).

Pragmatic
mechanisms (such as warranted assertability maneuvers) that help
       explain away certain linguistic data.

The
use of certain linguistic examples to motivate positions in epistemology,
such as the "Bank Cases", and the "Airport Case".

Even
though the linguistic method is widely used, there has thus far
been no sustained discussion as to its viability. This conference
aims to take a first step towards rectifying this situation. The
overall purpose of this conference is to bring together outstanding
researchers working in this particular area of epistemology to discuss
the validity of the linguistic method and bring it into actual practice.

Invited
     Speakers

The following epistemologists will present keynote lectures:
