Seventh Annual Edinburgh Graduate Epistemology Conference

 

The 7th Annual Edinburgh Graduate Epistemology Conference will take place 19th-20th June 2017. This year’s keynote speakers will be Maria Lasonen-Aarnio (University of Michigan) and Ram Neta (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill). All graduate presentations will have respondents from faculty members at Edinburgh or a neighbouring university.

 

We invite graduate students to submit essays within any area of epistemology (broadly construed). Essays should be under 4000 words, anonymised for blind review, and accompanied by an abstract of no more than 250 words.

CFP: PG Session at 2015 SPA Annual Meeting

We are pleased to announce a call for papers for the Postgraduate Session at the 2015 Scots Philosophical Association Annual Meeting, taking place at the University of Glasgow on 4th and 5th December, 2015.  Up to 2 papers will be selected for presentation at the Meeting.  The PG Session provides PhD students with their opportunity to showcase their work and receive feedback at the annual meeting of the professional association of philosophers in Scotland.  Those presenting papers will have their travel costs and accommodation covered by the SPA.

The keynote speaker at this year’s meeting will be Peter Railton (University of Michigan).

Submission is open to all students enrolled in PhD programmes in philosophy in Scotland.  Papers of no more than 3,000 words, on any area of philosophy, should be prepared for blind review and sent to the Secretary (scotsphil@gmail.com) by 1st September, 2015.

Call for Book Chapter Proposals
Vernon Press invites short book chapter proposals to be included in a forthcoming scholarly volume on Forgiveness and Philosophy, broadly construed. All philosophically-based schools of thought are encouraged to submit. Other disciplines are encouraged to submit, as long as the chapter contains a clear philosophical component. Also, proposals dealing with corollary issues like resentment, anger, mercy, and vengeance are welcome, as long as they are appropriately related to and clearly discussed in relation to forgiveness.

Description
Forgiveness has long been the purview of theology and psychology, but over the past few decades authors like Jeffrie Murphy, Jean Hampton, Charles Griswold, Margaret Holmgren, Julia Kristeva, Kathryn Norlock, Martha Nussbaum, Nicholas Wolterstorff, and many others have generated a philosophically rich dialogue regarding the nature of forgiveness.  With hopes of continuing this dialogue, while generating new ideas and avenues of dialogue, Vernon Press has commissioned a book (with the possibility of a series) on Forgiveness and Philosophy.  We are currently seeking contributions to be included in the first volume.

Call for Abstracts: Ecological Perception: Amodal and Multimodal Trends

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

University of Edinburgh, May 29 & 30, 2015

This conference aims to bring together philosophers working on a broadly ecological approach to perception to address questions of multimodal sensory integration and the amodal perception of environmental information.

“Ecological Perception” is interpreted liberally as any approach to perceptual function and content that takes contingent features of the environment or evolutionary history to play a key explanatory role.  This broad understanding is meant to include not only the tradition stemming directly from J. J. Gibson’s ecological optics, but also related traditions such as gestalt psychology, J. v. Uexküll’s Umwelt theory, and more recent approaches from the phenomenological, embodied, and enactivist movements.

The aim is to examine resources within these traditions for moving beyond the focus on within-modality (and even cross-modal) perception to a broader perspective on the integration of multiple modalities within a unified experience.  Also of interest are questions of how perception via a single modality might provide modality-independent (amodal) information about the world (should colour experience be understood as merely about colours, or can it tell us more?) and whether traditionally unimodal perceptual categories (taste, touch, spatial perception) can more helpfully be understood in multi- or amodal terms.

Call for Papers: Themes from Smith and Rousseau

The International Adam Smith Society and the Rousseau Association will hold a joint meeting at The University of Glasgow July 20th -22nd 2015. The conference aims to bring together scholars with an interest in the work of either or both of these thinkers with a view to stimulating discussion of their shared interests and the relationship between two prominent members of the Enlightenment.

The conference aims to explore the ideas and shared concerns of Adam Smith and Jean-Jacques Rousseau.  Proposals for papers are invited on any aspect of Smith, Rousseau, or their shared intellectual interests including (but not limited to) pitié, sympathy, commerce, freedom, nature and science. Given the aim of the conference the organisers are particularly keen to invite papers that deal with both Smith and Rousseau.

Call for Papers: Foundations of Normativity

The 2015 Edinburgh Foundations of Normativity Workshop will be held at the University of Edinburgh on 13th and 14th March, 2015.  We invite submissions of abstracts of original papers on moral, legal, or epistemic normativity (or related topics). We aim to invite the authors of two of these papers to speak at the workshop.  Workshop papers will be circulated in advance; authors will need to submit a final version by 28th February, 2015.  We will be able to provide some travel support for the authors of papers accepted for presentation.

Submissions should consist of an 1,000-word abstract, prepared for blind review, and should be emailed to matthew.chrisman@ed.ac.uk before 1st December, 2014.  Submission emails should include the author’s contact and affiliation information.

Call for Papers: Arché Graduate Conference

Arché, Philosophical Research Centre for Logic, Language, Metaphysics and Epistemology, is hosting the 8th Annual Arché Graduate Conference in November 2014. We invite graduate students to submit high-quality papers. Philosophical Quarterly Essay Prize 2014

The Philosophical Quarterly invites submissions for its 2014 international prize essay competition, the topic of which is ‘Humans and Other Animals’.

What lessons can we learn from thinking about our relations with non-human animals? For instance:

  • What are the differences, and what are the similarities, between capacities for cognition and agency in humans and other animals?
  • What moral constraints, if any, are there on our treatment of them?
  • Which theoretical perspective gives the best answers to questions about the morality of our relations with non-human animals?
  • Might it be our moral duty to prevent animals from harming each other?
  • Are there good moral objections to eating meat from animals genetically engineered to be unconscious?
  • We welcome submissions of 8,000 words or fewer addressing these or other questions about humans and other animals.

Essays should be typed in double spacing. Electronic submission is preferred and contributions may be sent as email attachments to pq@st-andrews.ac.uk. Most formats are acceptable, but PDF is preferred.

Alternatively, non-electronic submissions may be sent to the address below. Three copies of each essay are required and these will not be returned. All entries will be regarded as submissions for publication in The Philosophical Quarterly, and both winning and non-winning entries judged to be of sufficient quality will be published. The closing date for submissions is 1st November 2014.

NIP Summer School: Foundations of Logic and Mathematics

18 June 2014 – 25 June 2014

The Northern Institute of Philosophy (Aberdeen) will host a summer school on the Foundations of Logic and Mathematics, led by JC Beall, Oystein Linnebo, Greg Restall, and Crispin Wright. Please see the summer school syllabus and timetable for more information. The summer school is aimed primarily at graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and researchers.

The cost of the Summer School is £395 which includes 7 nights accommodation in halls on campus (the first nights accommodation being Wednesday 18th and the last night being Tuesday 24th. Participants who wish to arrive in Aberdeen before 18th or stay on the evening of 25th will be charged per extra evening.)

Description: The sixth annual St Andrews/Stirling Kant Reading Party will be dedicated to Kant & Adam Smith and take place at Burn House in Angus on 29 July through 1 August 2013. The location of the Reading Party, Burn House, is approximately one hour away from St Andrews and offers excellent opportunities for hiking, and many other leisure activities. The theme of the reading party will be honor and respect in Kant and Smith. We will examine how Kant and Smith understand respect for the law/ respect for general rules, and explore links between their treatment of respect and their views on honor. In doing so we will discuss texts from Smith’s Theory of Moral Sentiments, Kant’s Second Critique, The Metaphysics of Morals, and Lectures on Ethics.

CFP: The Philosophy of Tyler Burge

Description: Philosophy at the University of Glasgow is proud to be hosting Professor Tyler Burge as a Scots Philosophical Association Centenary Fellow. To mark Professor Burge’s visit, the University will be holding a two-day workshop exploring themes from Burge’s work. The aim of the workshop is to bring together philosophers interested in questions of mind, language and knowledge for discussion and debate centred on Burge’s vital contributions to these topics.

Call for papers: Abstracts of 250-500 words are invited on any aspect of Burge’s work. Proposals addressing themes from Burge’s recent book Origins of Objectivity are particularly encouraged.  Speakers will each be given slots of at least one hour. As the workshop aims to foster informal discussion, there is flexibility regarding the format of presentations.  Speakers may wish to present a paper followed by Q&A. Alternatively, speakers may wish to lead a structured discussion of issues raised by Burge’s work. This might take the form of a brief exposition of an issue followed by a series of discussion topics.  The deadline for submission is May 3rd. We aim to notify speakers of our decision no later than May 17th. CFP: Embodied Music Cognition

Description: The purpose of this conference is to stake out the possibilities of a distinct research field for embodied music cognition. Over the past few decades, developments in cognitive science – especially the 4E paradigms of understanding cognition as an embodied, enactive, extended, and embedded process – have slowly but surely reshaped our understanding of the relationship between the brain, body, and world. While these movements have developed concurrently with experimental and theoretical work on “embodied” human activities, such as various forms of artistic practices and sensorimotor tasks, they must also be understood in a broader context. For instance, important historical and contemporary roots of embodiment research include philosophical traditions such as phenomenology and pragmatism, psychological traditions such as psychoanalysis and ecological psychology, and a move away from “music in itself” towards the conditions in which we listen to music in musicological studies.

Call for papers: We are now accepting submissions for both paper and poster presentations. Papers will consist of a 20-25 minute presentation followed by a 10 minute discussion period. CFP: Evaluative Perception: Aesthetic, Ethical, Normative

Description: The central questions to which the conference will be addressed include:

  1. Are there good reasons for thinking that evaluative perception is possible? Is this limited to any particular sensory modality/ies?
  2. Is there anything distinctive about evaluative perception, or particular types of evaluative perception?
  3. What are the epistemological consequences of evaluative perception?

As well as these questions, the topic of the conference will connect with broader discussions and debates in aesthetics, epistemology, ethics, and the philosophy of perception, e.g., the possibility of cognitive penetration, amodal perception, and cross-modal perception, the admissible contents of experience, the relationship between imagination and perception, the impact of so-called ‘framing effects’ on perceptual experience, whether perception can be said to be rational and whether perception could be the conclusion of an argument, the role of experience in aesthetic appreciation, and the prospects for various approaches in ethics, e.g., ethical intuitionism and virtue ethics.
